Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapeutic approach that focuses on the interaction between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It aims to help individuals identify, challenge, and modify unhelpful cognitive and behavioural patterns that may contribute to psychological distress, ultimately enhancing mental wellbeing and overall quality of life. CBT also provides individuals with skills and techniques that promote autonomy, enabling them to become active participants in their own therapeutic process. A central feature of CBT is its collaborative nature: therapist and client work together within a therapeutic relationship grounded in trust, safety, and authenticity.
The duration of CBT varies depending on individual needs. While there is no fixed number of sessions, it is typically a structured, short- to medium-term intervention that is goal-oriented and focused on present concerns. When early life experiences are relevant to current difficulties, these are also explored to support deeper understanding and change. Therapy often involves between-session tasks or “homework” to reinforce learning and support the practical application of skills in everyday life.
CBT has been shown to be effective in a wide range of mental health difficulties, including anxiety, depression, panic disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), somatic symptom disorders, eating disorders, grief, and other personal and interpersonal challenges.
